The Bambu Lab A1 is the printer that brought high-speed, multi-color printing to the open-frame market. With a 256 mm³ build volume, direct-drive extruder, 300 °C hotend, and the AMS Lite system for four-color printing, it is the go-to choice for hobbyists who want Bambu Lab reliability without the enclosed X1C or P1S price tag. Because the A1 is an open-frame bed-slinger, your material choices differ significantly from Bambu's enclosed models. This guide covers what runs best and what to avoid. PLA and PLA+ PLA is where the A1 excels. Bambu Lab's default profiles for PLA are extremely well-tuned, and the high-flow hotend handles fast PLA printing at 200–300 mm/s with ease. The textured PEI plate provides excellent adhesion at 55–65 °C bed temperature. PLA+ offers improved toughness on the same settings and is an easy upgrade. For multi-color prints, the AMS Lite handles PLA and PLA+ beautifully with four spools loaded simultaneously. TPU and Flexible Materials The direct-drive extruder handles TPU well, though the AMS Lite cannot feed flexible filaments. TPU must be loaded directly into the extruder using the external spool holder. Print at 20–40 mm/s with nozzle temps of 220–240 °C and bed temps of 40–50 °C. Softer TPU (85A–92A) works better at slower speeds. Materials to Avoid The A1 is not suitable for ABS, ASA, PC, or nylon. Without an enclosure, these materials warp, crack, and produce fumes. The open bed-slinger design also means the print bed moves forward and backward aggressively at high speeds, which can dislodge warping ABS parts. If you need these materials, consider the P1S or X1C. PLA-SILK and Specialty PLAs PLA-SILK prints beautifully on the A1 at 210–230 °C. The high-flow hotend keeps up with silk's slower-flow characteristics, and the open frame means you do not risk heat-creep softening the silk before extrusion. Can the Bambu Lab A1 print ABS?
Not reliably. The A1 is an open-frame printer with no enclosure, so ABS prints suffer from rapid cooling, warping, and layer separation. The aggressive bed-slinger motion also makes it harder for warping parts to stay adhered. If you need ABS, get the P1S or X1C.
Does the AMS Lite work with all filaments?
No. The AMS Lite can handle PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, and other rigid filaments. It cannot handle TPU or other flexible materials — those must be fed directly through the external spool holder. The AMS Lite is also not sealed, so it is not a dry box.
What is the maximum print speed for PLA on the A1?
